FAQs

Let’s answer your physical therapy questions to help start your comeback today.

Do I need a physician prescription for physical therapy?
Kansas is a direct-access state for physical and occupational therapy, which means you do not need a prescription to start your treatment. Most insurance plans cover treatment without a physician prescription, but some plans still require one before your first session. Our staff can quickly verify if this applies to your policy.
Do you take my insurance?
We accept all major insurance plans and will verify your coverage before your first session. We pride ourselves on our cost transparency and will answer any questions you have related to billing and claims processing. For those that do not have health insurance, we offer self pay options due at the time of service.
How long does a typical session last?
The initial examination and follow-up sessions typically last 60 minutes. Depending on your specific condition and goals for rehab, follow-up session times can vary from 45-90 minutes. Your therapist will work with you to create an individualized program that is right for you.
What will I be doing during a treatment session?
Our therapists create a customized plan to address your specific limitations and help you reach your goals. This may involve manual therapy (hands-on techniques), corrective exercises to restore mobility and strength, education to aid in your recovery, as well as specialized interventions including pain-relieving modalities. No two treatment plans are alike, you and your therapist will discuss how your individualized plan will help you optimize your recovery.
What should I wear to my first visit?
We recommend wearing loose clothing that you are comfortable moving around in. The specific region of the body we will be treating needs to be as accessible as possible. Close toed shoes are ideal if you anticipate being up on your feet during the session. Please also bring any braces, adaptive equipment, or assistive devices you plan to use during the visit.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
Please bring a government issued photo ID, your insurance card, and any prescriptions for physical therapy that your doctor provided you. We will email you forms to fill out online before your session- if you wish to fill them out in person, please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled time to complete the forms.
What will I be doing at home to help my recovery?
All patients are provided extensive education on how they should modify their activity at home to best assist in the rehabilitation process. Specialized home exercises are often provided to assist in recovery, which are tailored to fit your needs and your schedule.
What can I expect to feel during and after my session?
Rest assured, we do not adopt a philosophy of “no pain, no gain.” Most folks will be able to reach their goals without pushing through or increasing their pain. In many situations, patients feel an improvement in their mobility and decreased pain after their treatment sessions. If your goals involve improving your range of motion or your strength, you may feel muscle soreness and fatigue following your visit, much like the feeling after a workout session. Our therapists are skilled in managing your symptoms while helping you improve your function.
How long will my entire course of treatment take?
The entire plan of care is based on your current complaint, the findings from your initial evaluation, as well as your overall goals for treatment. You and your therapist will discuss the findings, your prognosis, and how long a course of treatment is anticipated to last. Your therapist is looking to get you as independent as possible as fast as possible without compromising the quality of your care. Visit totals can vary from a few sessions in instances of minor limitations, to a dedicated treatment plan over the course of several weeks or months in some postoperative cases.
What is your cancellation policy?
We appreciate a courtesy notice at least 24 hours in advance when possible. Your therapist will work with you to help maintain your prescribed plan of care and work to reschedule your appointment so your overall outcome is not negatively impacted by a lapse in care.

You will not be disappointed at Orthopedic Performance Therapy of Kansas City located in Lenexa, Kansas. They are the new guys on the block but totally competitive with any large multi-facility PT orthopedic centers. I’m a 76 year old and have experienced rehab in the past without the satisfaction I get when I go here.
